Bodyboarding, wetsuits, and friends

The past handful of days have been devoted to the joyous reunion of two friends. These two:

That’s Naomi on the left and me on the right. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but we are sporting loads of new freckles and there is new life in our muscles. I introduced Naomi to wetsuits and our beach, and it was a damn good time.

I’ve been out bodyboarding a few times now, and I think I’m beginning to get the hang of it. I used to be a skateboarder and so the whole ‘board and me’ thing isn’t such a foreign idea, but the part about wetsuits and water is very new indeed. The last two times out in the waves saw me learning to carve (or whatever equivalent terminology is relevant in bodyboarding – I have much to learn) and riding more waves than ever before. I love it. Now I’m thinking crazy thoughts about upgrading my board (it’s not crap, but certainly not the one for my future adventure), getting fins, and maybe even surf lessons. Surfing would be a kind of natural step from skating, and maybe my ability to balance on a board would transfer to the new parameters… We’ll see.

After her initial unfun experience of getting into a dripping-wet rental wetsuit, it’s clear Naomi will be back for more romping in the Atlantic. I think I even heard her mention something about the possibility of getting her own kit… Cornwall itself has a way of getting into your heart, and no doubt there is now salt water in her veins.

I’ve said it before: I’ll leave the coast when I’m dead.
The more friends that visit us down here, the more I think understand that.

  1. That’s a really good picture. The color of undying friendship blazes through the fades, the colors of mere materiality, to the glow of life.

    U 2 are photogenic.
