Last year, I participated in NaNoWriMo. I told very few people. I don’t think I even told Neil I was doing it. I managed nearly 11,000 words before falling ill with the flu for two weeks. (Most colds and flus go straight to my respiratory system and last much longer than they should. Bloody asthma.) Anyway, I didn’t finish the book, and I didn’t finish NaNoWriMo in 2007. I was pretty mad at myself – and at nature for gifting me with the plague for half of November – but at least I have that book started and I’ll finish it one day. I haven’t touched that chunk of manuscript for a year, and I’m going to continue to not touch it for at least another thirty days.
This year? I’m trying NaNoWriMo again, and I’m being brave enough to mention it. You’ll now see a word counter in my right-hand sidebar. With some luck, it will max out by November 30th, indicating the completion of a first-draft manuscript. Time to start popping Vitamin C pills, sip on some Echinacea, and sleep in an oxygen chamber. Dammit, I’m finishing this year.
Consider this fair warning that if my blog output is less frequent over the next few weeks, that I’m trading the regularjen posts for the brass ring that I’ll be typing and clawing my way towards for the foreseeable month. Oh, and I’m going to full-time hours at my part-time job for the Christmas season too. I’m kind of building up a Dagwood sandwich of challenge, but fuck it- I’m going for it.
Wish me luck, and keep an eye on that word count in my sidebar. 🙂
