A list that makes a difference (to me anyway)

I sing- as often as possible and have done so in many public performances and countless private. I’m not trained but I seem to get it mostly right. One of these days I’ll take a few lessons to learn how to open up my throat and lungs more efficiently (I’m sure I’m on the right track but could use a pro for guidance) but until that time I’ll muddle along with my techniques as they are currently.

No one has the range to sing along with every favourite song, but everyone has a list – consciously considered or not -¬†of the tracks that we (think we) sound best at or find the most fun to sing. This list will not always exhibit good taste and will likely lack in the ‘coolness’ department here and there. No matter. Songs we love to sing bring joy and happiness, catharsis and freedom. Who really cares what’s in the list then, right? Right.

Here, in no particular order, are some of my favourite songs to sing along with:
Pull My Strings – Dead Kennedys
Della and the Dealer – Hoyt Axton
Suicide Shift – Paw
Me and My Charms – Kristen Hersh

  1. I’m very sad that I didn’t see Brandy The Boy is Mine on your list. I think there must be a mistake that Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears aren’t on the list either. Oh wait, those are my favorites.

  2. OMG Jodi! I forgot about The Boy is Mine! Must find that for my iTunes… 😀

Brit-Brit is only rarely in rotation (typically remixes) and though I like Justin’s solo stuff in moderation, neither have songs I like to sing. Listening to them in the privacy of my headphones and Last.fm confessional is a different story though… 😉

  3. My partial list:

    Lady Marmalade – Patti LaBelle
    White Flag – Dido
Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners
    Nigel – ?
    Blue Dress – Depeche Mode
    Chains – Fleetwood Mac
    Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
    Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
    What’s Going On – 4 Non-Blondes
Land Down Under – Men at Work
The Promise – When in Rome
    The Look – Roxette
    Buttercup – Four Tops? Temptations?
Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac
Life in the Fast Lane – The Eagles
    Wasted Time – The Eagles
In the Air Tonight – Phil Collins
    Crying – K.D. Lang/Roy Orbison
Dance With Someone – Whitney Houston
    Joey – Concrete Blonde
I love the Nightlife – ? old disco song
    Everlasting Love – ? old
Where Did You Sleep Last Night – Kurt Cobain – good screaming song
At least half of ABBA’s catalog
    Somebody Told Me – Killers
    When I’m Gone – 3Doors Down

  4. Oooh! Some good ones in there Mom! 😀

Oh, the Nigel song is done by XTC. And I totally agree with the Where Did You Sleep Last Night song. That is my favourite Nirvana song ever.

  5. OMG, how could I forget “Blue Christmas” by Elvis. That one is just plain silly fun for doing the Elvis thing ! I don’t know anyone who can resist that.
